This year's OVO safety course and information session will be held on Saturday, May 3rd, starting 10 am, Carp fairground parking lot. https://maps.google.ca/maps?q=3790+...=3790+Carp+Rd,+Carp,+Ontario+K0A+1L0&t=m&z=16
The course consists of two parts - Theory - about 1 hour and will be held on the parking lot; and Practice - 1 h. as well, which will be held in the beginning of Carp trail. After the course we usually do a trail run...

Absolutely. This event is made just for you. I'll be there. Consider it a mild shake down :)

I would like to join up for the safety course and learn a few things. Having never really used a winch before aside from smaller ones for atv and sleds. Is there a cost or entry fee? And how long a trail ride is it afterwards?

Thanks Dave

No cost or entry fee for the course, just show up with a good attitude. For the trail run, the trail isn't very long, but if there is breakage or any issues, it can take all day. Mitko can probably give a better estimate on time, though, and the trail run is optional.

As said the trail is not very long and usually takes 2-3 hours. This year though is very wet and I dont know what the condition of the trail will be.

I am interested in coming out but was wondering if the Carp trail is Fullsize friendly. I'm driving a '07 tundra and don't really want to bust it up too bad.

Not really full size friendly. Expect quite a few pin stripes as well as a few dings at the lower parts.

Is it worth fitting breathers to my front and rear diffs and Trans should the water and mud on the trail be high enough ? I'm not looking at seeing how deep I can go but just wonder if I need to worry about venting them higher up.

In general, that would be a good thing to do, just route them high up in the engine bay.

For Carp, though, the water shouldn't be that high, with the exception of the mud hole at the end, and I would recommend you stay away from that, especially with the wet year we've had.

BTW, I'm Kevin from the meeting on Thursday :)

Not sure if I can make it yet, but sounds interesting. I know you said 31" minimum for the optional trail run.......I'm in a liberty on 30.5" (235/70/16s)...no go??

I've got a bunch of recovery stuff - hi lift, couple straps, chains w/ hooks, d-ring receiver, front tow hooks etc. Just want to learn how to use all of it safely and effectively/efficiently.

Will do, I am looking forward to the truck's inaugural run. I just hope the Jeep Nation can put up with sharing the trail with a fullsize. Hopefully I don't do too much landscaping.

Ahh I noticed that his ride is a Gelandenwagon. Having had the privilege of driving them around and fixing a number of new and old ones at work I know they are tough and are proven in the world stage. The newer ones are much less capable than the forty year old design. Being a military brat the Mogs trump a G in my books. I look forward to seeing all in action.

Regardless of attending the trail run or not, you should do the safety course ...

Brad is right, unless things have changed since I went most of it is done in a parking lot but at one point you go a very short distance down the trail and I am sure you can get most of the way and always ride shotgun with someone for the rest.

Oh and leave the chains at home, they are never used in recovery other than towing. they make great projectiles (but you would have learned that in the course).

The more I think about going in with a stock liberty (and reading your comments -2Greys- earlier this year on getting your Libby x-memb banged up), the less I want to get on that trail. I think I'm only at 29.5" anyhow...and old springs.

I have read about the chains becoming projectiles and also read about people that swear by them... I've heard many bad stories now so will take them back to PA. Thanks again.

cheers

The course is free - for last year. From the next year there will be a small fee. Club membership is $35 a year and is due after the member is voted in the club.
