Yeah, usually for their own needs at the expense of reality. Not going there, just sayin'

I've had buddies (yes more than a few) recieve comments from their staff that they didn't support the military - so i no longer shop there, luckily there are many other outdoor stores in town that do.

Yeah that's pretty gay. Not surprised looking at some of their staff but I doubt the company would condone those type of comments. But even then the best solution is to vote with your wallet.
