if I can get my sh*t fixed by Sat I would also like to go for a run, although would prefer somewhere other then lavant, outside of Calabogie that is the only one I have done this summer... but really just want to wheel....

Any issues with Hunting there this coming weekend?

Thanks Brad, I hadn't taken the time to check yet. It won't be gun season so we're OK.

Tim, what trail would you like to do? All I've done is Quinn and Darling.

all I have done is the quinn area, so quinn, Crag and Lavant, so was thinking just about anything else :) but this is all dependent on if I can get a new spindle in time to put my chiat back together. (minor bearing issue). It would be me and the little one, so most anything in the area would be nice... I won;t be pushing it to hard, if Lavant is where you guys want to go, I will tag along..

Well obviously I can't promise anything as I seem to be unable to get my truck done when I think I should but I would like to go to Flinton (again for others) if you are interested but I am going to plan to do it only if it is supposed to be sunny (which it is http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/caon2071?ref=topnav_homepage_savedcity )as the enjoyment factor there is 10-fold when it is dry and sticky. Is there any interest in that?

So looking at the usual segments for hunters, bow season is everywhere around here throughout October, including the powerline that was run this past weekend. Bow is far less popular then rifle season, generally we have always stayed away throughout rifle season. as I understand it, this coming weekend will be a big setup weekend, meaning the rifle hunters will be out setting up their perches and stands etc. preping the hunt camps. aka lots of traffic (atv or otherwise). I am normally very caution about interfering with the hunters, and will not go out in their prime time (aka rifle season) but given that bow season is the entire month of October, that is a big window on top of the rifle time, then goes back to bow for 2 more weeks in Nov, followed by all of Dec, I am not to concerned about it this weekend, and say we go where we want.

Just my $0.02, keep the change.

Sorry to side with the hunters here, but if I was sitting up in my tree stand on the last day of bow season and a crowd of trucks rolled through, I would be mighty pissed!! Please pick a day and area where there is NO hunting.

First of all John that would mean that there is no 4-wheeling to be done in our area from October 1 - December 31 because correct me if I am wrong we are 59 and Flinton is 67 http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@fw/documents/document/239849.pdf but that is when bow hunting is open but I am sure that you have never wheeled in that period http://ovo.ca/forums//showthread.php?171-Quinn-Runn-Sat.-Oct.-13th&highlight=lite . :p

Well going on the bow hunting thing I talked to my Dad who is a bow hunter and here is his feelings on it: Bow hunters generally hunt early morning and late afternoon. The reason for this is that generally you can only shoot 50yds and therefore stay in your stand and wait for the deer to travel close by. It is not like a rifle where since you can shoot across a field that you hunt all day, so if we don't get to the trails until about 10 and leave by 4 or so it probably doesn't effect them. Also trucks or atvs driving around generally don't spook deer, dad says you can drive right into the field with your atv but the moment you try to get off or show some sort of profile they take off right away. Now I am not talking about Lavant. Quinn or Crag as they are in the bush and too hard to stay out the hunters way. Even The Gorge is fairly narrow but I have never even seen signs of bow hunters there though I have not specifically been looking for them. Also John I am sure you have been to Flinton and should know it is about 1km wide and we only go near the edges in a few spots in 5+ km and one spot in the bush. Also if we see bow hunters we can always check with them and make sure to stay away from where they are and maybe even herd some in their direction :lmao:
Please any bow hunters correct me if I am wrong about this info and just to note I agree with no wheeling at all in rifle season.

Here is another possiblity for this weekend, I think there is ton's of potential on the Calabogie powerline which is wide as it goes forever has a good road and there are endless rocks very similar to Flinton. Tim you know it best would you want to lead an "exploratory" mapping of obstacles on the powerline? Or do you think it is even worth it?

i am not sure I would want to be counted on to be leader anywhere. my intentions are good to go out, but I am only picking up the part on Thursday, which leaves Friday to get it all together, if my life has told me anything, nothing ever goes as planned..... I will leave it to Richard the organizer to decide where to go, and I am hoping to be able to follow where ever that is!

It's nice to hear the opinions of hunters, I don't want to ruin their day either but as said there's so few bow hunters and at the same time other hunters go on the trails on ATVs and 4x4s.

As for trail options I like both of Dwayne's suggestions:
Flinton: I'd be in for Saturday, I just have to be back to bring my son trick-or-treating Sunday night.
Calabogie power line: Although I think if it was a good trail we would have heard about it by now, I always prefer seeing new places than going back to the same old ones.

Well Flinton is nothing but an access road like the Gorge or Calabogie where the DMR guys have just started looking around and saying "I wonder if if I could climb those rocks over there" instead of just driving down it. It is like the Gorge where we have almost doubled the number of obstacles by not driving to the next obstacle right away but instead trying to determine if anything we see is an obstacle. That being said I really do not know the Calabogie powerline that well as I have only been to the Spring Fever "end" once and did the prescribed obstacles on the way. Does anybody think there is a section of the Calabogie power line that has some potential?

There is lots on the Calabogie powerline, it goes for miles, and depending on what you want there is lots there probably not that different then flinton. that said, it has been done a lot as Richard mentioned. in the old days the PJ party used to start near the sand pit (currently flag 10 ish), then go from there for a very long way. that is a bit closer for me, but not huge time difference. for me it is 3:10 drive to Flinton one way according to google, so a very long drive. I am not against it.. just makes for a long day for the little one. I will not be trying anything to hard with the little one in the truck, so is there enough general fun stuff without pushing the truck to hard? I won't risk flipping at all costs, and while it looks fun, need to think little person.

Well the great thing about Flinton is that there are dozens of climbs everywhere you look, there is all sorts of ledges and little hills that we keep discovering whether for built trucks all the way down to stockish trucks. So I think you will be able to have fun and show the little one a fun time. Where do you live that it is 3:10?
