just read this article on expo (http://expeditionportal.com/driving-skills-maximizing-traction/) and was somewhat surprised to hear their last statement:

"Your only other last-ditch option would be to left foot brake while on the power to stop the spinning tires and force the differentials to lock, but in most stock vehicles there’s a significant risk of breaking a diff completely, shearing an axle, or breaking a u-joint or CV."

I'm a relative newb to trail driving, but...

Yes, you can do it, works fine, and no real risk of breaking the diff as it's no different than a high traction surface (asphault). All you're doing is trying to fool the diff into thinking both tires have traction.
