LF : Jeep TJ Universal Joint For Front dana 30 Axles ????

Mud Rookie

Hey everyone,

I have a few guys who have offered to help me out in 2 weeks replacing my front ball joints on my Jeep TJ. I was advised that maybe I should replace my front universal joints for the front axle at the same time. They said that if I already have all the necessary parts removed from the front axle, I might as well replace the u-joints as well.

I have looked all over and I cannot find or even determine which ones I need. Any recommendations and does anyone know of a shop or...

Yep one on either side, these are available from any autoparts store(CAPS, NAPA, Bensons, CTC, etc..) or even from Malemberg's driveline shop. They'll run you anywhere from about $18 to $60 a joint aftermarket,I think they're about $80 retail from the dealer.

I know its funny but even Canadian tire sells them... not that bad quality. Any part store will have them - Napa, Part source, CAPS and such

Yah, spend the money on spicer ones IMHO. Does the D30 have the option of grease-less like the D60? They are a bit stronger....

I believe they are greaseless,it's the driveshaft ones where you have the choice. I think (it's been about 3 years) that they were about $30 each when I bought them but I could be wrong.

The axle shaft joints are bigger than the drive shaft joints.
That's correct they are different U-Joints. The TJ drive shaft u-joints are Spicer 5-153x (I believe this is the greaseless model). You may also want to look at replacing your centering ball which is in the double cardon joint in your front drive shaft. That part number is 211355x. Good news is once these are all done it will be a good long time before you need to replace them again.

Greaseless u-joints have grease. They don't have to be greased. There are some pros and cons with greaseless and greaseable. Greasable have a built in weakness compared to greaseless as the center of it is hollow so it isn't as strong. However if regularly maintained, greasable will outlast and you don't have to take it apart to repack. With 4 of them on a driveshaft it makes maintenance a hell of a lot easier. You want to regularly inspect your u-joints on your drive shafts, on a TJ any failure usually ends up destroying your transfer case.

Driveshaft u-joints usually use a c-clip on top of the caps, and axle u-joint use a c-clip on the bottom of the caps, this alone makes them different. We can show you when you come over.

I personally prefer greasable u-joints, I don't think the small hole down the middle makes a significant difference in strength and since we sometimes go in water I'd rather be able to push the water back out and put in new grease with the grease gun.

If you still havent found the ujoints you need, give me a call at No Limits Auto Parts (613 822 6226). The axle ujoints on a TJ are the same for any year from 1997 to 2006. Precision ujoints is what i run on any of my Jeeps and Dodges, they are a company under Moog. They are good quality ones, and ive never had any issues with them. If you are having trouble looking them up, the part numbers are 371 ($32) for greasable (thats what i run) and 377 ($39) for non greasable. Hope this helps

For me in the D60 it makes sense to go to the stronger joint, especially when a joint breaks it usually takes the ear's off the shafts, costing more money. The stock TJ spicer part # is non-greasable BTW.

D60 Joint comparison:

That being said the reason people are saying they prefer greasable is valid.

I prefer greasable aswell. On a mild daily driver rig i really dont think you will break a joint. I have bever broken a joint yet and we all know how I wheel. I use ac delco HD
