Snow tires

Ok, other than the obvious, are any common off road tires any good in snow? Its easier, (ie: cheaper) for me to pick up a set of used off roads than to buy new snows. Iroks? Truxus Mt's? Goodrich MT's? any ideas? I had 33" truxus mt's on my sammi and they were bad in the snow, but some say the weight of the samurai played a part in that. I need some 35-39's in a winterable tread. On a tight budget.

My 33x10.5 BFG AT's were a good all around street / winter / trail tire. Only thing they really sucked at was slippery hill climbs.

The Iroks are a good deep snow tire, I was happy how they did on the trail last year ... I only had them on the road in the snow a couple of times, so no real comment there. I think Mike DD'd the sami in the winter with his radial iroks, maybe he can add some feedback.

+1 on the BFG At's... Best "off road" tire I have ever had for the steet and snow, but yes, they do suck off road..

I have Truxus on my FJ40 and like them for traction in the snow but width will be your enemy with 12.5's

My fj40 with the 33x12.5's is a nightmare in slush....

I fully understand that off road tires aren't ideal for snow. What I would like to do is find something used and large. This type of tire application is typically off road specific and these are the only tires in the size I need that I can find.
AT's come in 35,12.50,15 which is pretty good, but I'm a cheap bastard, or moreover, I've got other things on the truck I need to dump my money into. So if I can I'm gonna scoop up a used set of something big and run it, or stud it, or sipe the Sh** out of it and make do.

Now these bad boys are prob stiff as all hell, but they are skinny....and cheap...what cha have to say about that??

I'm not certain but I believe you can get a "real" snow tire in the Michelin (Alpin?) and Toyo. That would be P-metric sizes on 16" wheels though (285s, 315s, etc.)

Yokohama makes a 315/75R16 snow tire, but they appear to be sold out across Canada. That's a 35!

33's are too small, I've got a set of those and with them on I have no 5th gear. 315 is still only a 33....I need a 365 application or larger.

315 is a 35... unless they are somehow undersized (like most if not all BFGs).

Sounds to me like you've crossed the line from streetable to trail only.

There was a thread on JeepForum about a guy in Northern Ontario who was looking for about a 33" winter. The closest thing to that was from Nokian but it was for an 18" rim. He decided to stick with a 31". Some of the BFG ATs are severe storm rated though.

Or to be anal via the ProCrap calculator:

315/75R16 = 34.6 x 12.4 x 16

The only thing used your likely to find is BFG AT in 35x12.5x15. Which is likely a 34" tire if you want to be even more anal about it.

:D
