Stock friendly?

Ok I finally found an XJ that i like and I'm probably going to buy it barring some kind of horrible failure of the etest he's doing for me.

However in all my rush to try and find a damn vehicle i really forgot to ask if there are any stock friendly trails around here lol. Like something that i can wheel without worrying TOO much about breaking something.

Obviously you cant post where they are and such but if you could give me a rough idea of how many there are if any that are wheelable on...

Carp trail, Gorge, Burntlands (according to Matt you can do that one in a Honda!), Spring Fever capture the flag is stock friendly, ummmmm, I'm sure there are more.

According to Brad Lavant is with the exception of 2 spots:

There are two sections of this trail stock vehicles have trouble with ... minor scraping may result on control arm brackets and / or diffs. Simon dented his steering stabilizer and Dan picked up a nifty new scratch on the rear quarter panel on our last run to this trail.

You can take Crag Lake off that list. There would be nothing left of a stock truck after that trail..

Oh, and the new way I plan to run Darling will be 31's minimum... (Ask Matt what the part on the other side of the HWY is like :flipoff

Crag isn't that bad depending on time of year. Matt ran it in the Jeep last year around September.

Agreed but Matt is not a newbie. The water at the beginning alone is usually too much for anything close to stock. I just don't think it should be classified as a stock trail just to eliminate baby sitting. (don't want to give newbies false expectations)

True that! I wouldn't take the Runner through the hole in the spring/summer, heavy old boat ancher wouldn't make it.
I won't call it stock, let's just say it can be done in a mildly outfitted truck with the proper driver.

Well im new to offroading so I wouldnt want to go to any trails that require too much finese to get through in a stock XJ without banging something up. The vehicle still needs to get me to and from work. Hopefully in a month or two ill have enough cash to throw on a 3 inch lift and some 31s

Unless someone has a better idea to help out getting through more trails without sacrificing lots of cash.

I'd recommend you just get some good A/T tires and come enjoy some trails and events. You'll have lots of fun and learn lots about driving. Then you can take your time to decide what you want to do next with your truck.

We all started stock and know what it's like, and for a lot of us our fondest off-roading memories are from when our trucks were stock.

We also don't mind having stock vehicles come out on runs and helping you out. Keep an eye open for trail runs in this forum and the calender, and if you're not sure if your truck should go ask the trail leader.

Come out to our Spring Fever event. There is a stock class there and lots of people around to help you out.

I was stock most of the season last year, with BALD street tires and I was still able to go out plenty.
I would say number 1 priority is tow points (I was pulled by my front axle first time)

This is a basic overview of the Lift, tire size combo question... I am not taking credit for the info. because it is a collaboration of multiple websites that I came across during my hunt for the perfect setup...

Tire Size - Amount of lift - Body Mod & Fender Trimming:

29x9.50, 235/75R15, 255/70R15
No lift needed - Some chance of rubbing under full articulation

29x10.50", 29x11.50"
No lift - Minor fender trimming will be needed
1"-2" of lift - Well experience some rubbing under full articulation and minor trimming may be needed

30x9.50"
No lift - most likely experience some rubbing (okay for street only)

30x10.50", 30x11.50",30x12.50"
2" lift - wider the tire trimming maybe needed

NOTE: The wider the tire the more trimming needed

31x9.50", 31x10.50"
2.5" lift - some trimming will be needed
3" lift - no trimming

31x12.50", 31x13.50", LT325/60R15
3"-4" lift - fender trimming will be needed
4.5"-5" lift - minor fender trimming

32x9.50, 32.10.50"
4"-4.5" lift - minor fender trimming

32x11.50", 32x12.50", 32x14.50"
4.5"-5" lift - trimming will be needed.

33x9.50", 33x10.50", 33x11.50"
5.5" lift - some trimming needed
6"-6.5" lift - no trimming

33x12.50"
5.5"-6" lift - Trimming will be needed

34x9.50"
6" lift min. - minor trimming

35x12.50"
8" lift - fender trimming will be needed
Note:
- This is with minimal lift needed
- With a combination of aftermarket flares or TJ flares / fender trimming will help to accommodate larger tires for full articulation. (This becomes a factors with mostly 32"+ tires)


So I guess that means that 235 75 15's are your best bet for no lift.

I loved that trail! Expecially right beside the lake. That was awsome! I didn't have any problems on 31's but wouldn't want anything smaller.

I agree with that. When i went through the water it was low/mostly mud and you could see the bigger rocks to avoid. Plus i had Pete helping me through.

Ok so i checked www.tirerack.com and found GT Grabber AT2s for 96$ lol.. total shipped to ogdensburg its 482$.. US though but w/e thats like what? 550 CDN? That seems more affordable then a lift kit and 31s. Plus thats the size i use on my Ranger so when I switch to 3 inch lift and 31s i can just put the grabbers on my truck. W00t.

Now all i need to do is find new bumpers so you guys can pull me out when im stuck. lol

I am a fan of the General Grabber AT2s though I haven't actually run a set yet.

As far as a rfont tow point you don't need a new bumper, there are stock tow hooks, or like I did with my first ZJ, fab up some tow hooks using the existing holes for the brackets.

I suggest a search on XJ Tow hooks and see what you find.
Even buying factory tow hooks will be cheaper than a new bumper. However if you want a winch eventually maybe look into a new bumper now.
