What's wrong?

I was getting an oil change the other day and while my Jeep was up on the hoist the mechanics apprentice walked under it, pointed to this (see pictures below) and said "Yeuh" like something was wrong with it. But they never said anything to me. I figure it either the apprentice didn't know what he was talking about or my mechanic didn't notice it.

So please look at the pictures and tell me what is wrong with it if anything? I have no idea what it even is LOL

It's the slip yoke coming out of the back of your transfer case. Basically it's there to let the driveshaft change length as the rear axle moves up and down. I don't see anything really wrong other than the obvious fluid covering the yoke. Might be a leaky rear seal?

Yeah, looks a little wet. 13 year old Jeep could probably use a new seal.

Looks like it might be out a little far. Is your Jeep lifted a little (oops - yeah 2"). No worries. Running at the new location due to lift has probably made it start weeping a little

Keep an eye on the fluid level. Change the seal when you get a chance. Maybe think about a SYE if you plan on building it taller.

My driveshaft has been like that since I put the lift in my grand and I haven't had any problems with it. As ws mentioned, keep a eye on the fluid level.

Don't worry about the shaft slipping out I have wheeled mine for years without any problems, at least none with the driveshaft anyway.

Awesome thanks! Umm.. which fluid is it I should be keeing an eye on?

And when you say seal, is this the rear main seal? or some other seal? As you can tell I have a lot to learn yet :)

The darker, rust coloured part is called a slip yoke.

As your rear wheels move up and down due to suspension movement the propellor shaft moves up and down and this slip yoke goes in and out of the transfer case because it is attached to the shaft.

The slip yoke has a seal in there to keep the fluid from coming out of your transfer case.

On your transfer case you will see two largish bolt heads (or possibly two things that look like bolts with the heads cut off and a square hole inside them). I forget the exact size of the bolt heads - something like 1-1/8" IIRC. I'm thinking that your Jeep being a Chrysler will have the square hole style plug. Stick a 3/8" drive ratchet in there and it should back out. You may want to put a 3/8" extension on your ratchet to get better leverage.

The top one is to check level and add fluid.

The bottom one is to drain fluid. Make sure you have the right one before checking or you'll have ~1.5 liters of ATF fluid in your lap. ;) Big mess.

To check fluid remove the top plug and see if your fluid level is level with the hole. This needs to be done on level ground and you stick your finger in to feel around. :) When I seal it back up I'll put a dab of PTFE paste on the threads before screwing it back in.

If you are doing this out in your laneway, throw a largish, flattened cardboard box under the work area to catch any possible oil drips.
