which winch ?

I know this will stir up a whole mess of opinions but I am working up to educate myself on what winch to buy and what choice of cable - steel or synthetic. Being a nubie I have done a lot of reading and have checked out Warn, Smittybilt, Mile Marker, Superwinch etc. Any thoughts on reliability and experience for my purchase - I'm looking at a 10k lb winch as my truck is just shy of 6000lbs. It wont be permanently mounted as I use the truck in winter for hauling the sled and figure the...

They will all get the job done, but if you can stomach the price difference, go Warn. Having switched to synthetic, I would never go back to cable. Safer, lighter, and repairable.

Rule of thumb is curb weight X 1.8. I also love my synthetic, no need for gloves, but it's very sensitive to heat and can melt. Princess Auto stock warn winches now. My Chinese made Runva has served me good for the last 2 years. The wireless remote is the handiest feature ever.

X2 for warn. I played the cheap 8500lbs then 9000lbs Champion winch game, Costco has a great return policy but it just doesn't matter much when the trucks stuck and the winch has given up the ghost AGAIN! Switched to the cheap 8000lbs Superwinch that Canadian Tire was selling, that lasted two pulls and I melted a solenoid. (I may have held the button longer than 10secs but still, c'mon!) Now I have a WARN M8000 that has been great! I did melt two solenoids winching with a bad battery (don't do that) but I was able to rebuild the solenoids and it's been working perfectly ever since.
I would love to get the remote control and the synthetic line. The synthetic is a little more maintenance but oooooh so much nicer to use and so much lighter!
I would reconsider a permanent flush bumper mount. They take up a lot of approach angle when receiver mounted, and carrying 100lbs through knee deep muck is not fun!

I've always run Warn's as in my opinion you get what you pay for... I won't trust my day and/or my rig to a cheap knockoff. Also I switched to synthetic a few years ago and have never looked back.

Warn superwinch and Ramsey in my opinion. To cut costs I picked up my warn Xd9000i on eBay for 300. It needed new solenoids which I picked up. Granted it is probably also 10 years old when I got it but there is very little that can break on it and pretty much everything is available as repair parts from warn.

Lifetime warranties mean jack shit when you are stuck axle deep in mud and your new winch dies.
I entertain the idea of going synthetic but I use it maybe once or twice a year and do it safely. Biggest benefit would be getting the weight off of the front. May still do it when funding is better. Maybe Xmas gift this year

For something you will have on the front occasionally, I'd go synthetic. It will be stored out of the sun to help with the UV degradation, will be lighter for swapping on and off, and will be safer. Not cheap, though, and it needs to be handled with more care in respect to sharp edges and heat that a steel rope wouldn't be as hurt by.

As for make, the best you can afford. You may not need it often, but when you do need a winch, you need the best one out there. For my money, I'd go Warn and forget it.

Another for Warn here - Mine has lasted 8 years with absolutely NO maintenance. It died on me last Wheels A Churnin event - I took the motor apart and it was full of crap (Rust/mud/water) - Cleaned it all up and it works again. When you need it and it does not work you will wish you had spent the extra money. Also - Synthetic line is definitely worth the cost!

Warn. But the original one, not the Chinese line called Tabor. Ramsey. Superwinch - but carefully as they are all Chinese made and the models and quality vary all over the scale. If a budget one to be picked I will recommend T-max or Runva. On the chinese ones always check the reviews and try to get them from reputable seller. Synthetic line.

yup, Warn and Ramsey are the last american made non commercial winches. Warn moved some of the manufacture to China but they are not called warn anymore.

With most of you running synthetic, how do they fare out when they rub on the rocks on steep climbs to level?

I know with the steel cable, i had mine rubbing on a few occasions to exposed rock, while being pulled up an obstacle. I just wondered how a synth line would accommodate this

If the price of the warn is to much they offer a second series warn vr.

They don't like rubbing on rocks. I had a small rubber mat that I would throw over the sharp rocks.

Yes to synthetic and I guess I see that Warn is the preference, I had my eye on the Smittybilt XRC10 but may hold off my purchase until the meeting when I can discuss this in person and save myself a lot of typing.
thanks for the input

I will get a shit ton of flack for this.... but if I were going to get a NEW winch.......... It would be the warn POWER PLANT!

I currently run an 8274 that I picked up used with a rebuilt motor, I took it apart.... Cleaned it all up like new and haven't looked back.

I have been the winch bitch on many occasions and yet to have it falter once.

My reasoning behind spending 1600+ dollars on a winch, because it has the best air compressor(outside of on board air via a York compressor) out their. It is all in one tight package and has the reliability of a warn.

Power plant, If the compressor dies then the winch dies. Plus to much weight.

8274 would take that winch any day over any other winch on the market

with the synthetic you do have to be very careful with it rubbing, but all ropes on the market come with a 3-4 ft long sleeve that can be moved along the rope to the spot that may rub during a pull to protect it. The other advantage of rope is that if it breaks you can tie it back together (although this is only a temp fix and by tying knots in rope you decrease it's strength by up to 30%)

Every person who I've ever talked to that had an 8274 will never go to any other winch again. Hands down to be considered the best ever made.

I think for this nubie the cost of the 8274 is a bit steep, $1900 new, yes it looks like the rig if you're competing or mudding a lot. I have been hard pressed to find many decent used winches and I'd rather know the history so would prefer to go new. Hmmm I sense some deep discussions on Thursday.
