I think for this nubie the cost of the 8274 is a bit steep, $1900 new, yes it looks like the rig if you're competing or mudding a lot. I have been hard pressed to find many decent used winches and I'd rather know the history so would prefer to go new. Hmmm I sense some deep discussions on Thursday.

I also read that they aren't the greatest for a newb - the fast line speed keeps you on your toes, and if you aren't familiar with safety concepts on where (and where not) to put your hands, it can be a bit dangerous.

My old man's got a 9000lbs Tabor that works great, never a hiccup. Someone on this thread had mentioned it being a Chinese Warn but the winch says USA.

Tabor is the budget brand of Warn. The company is located in the states but a lot of their manufacturing is overseas

I mentioned this. As said they are made overseas. the one pictured could be a early production still made in the states. no longer though.

Any thoughts on reliability and experience for my purchase

since I've been wheeling (which is not too long compared to some on this site, I'm relatively still a newbie wheeler ) I've owned only warn winches: 2-m8000 's, 1 9500ti and two 8274's. on the trail I've seen many brands and they all seem to work well.

all winches no matter whether Chinese or not are good only if they are serviced and used properly.
and of course this has a lot to do with the battery/charging system of the vehicle.
good luck with it and remember "Safety First"
