Why not a Touareg?

I posted in this forum a few months ago and got laughed right out. I have a 2008 Touareg 4.2L V8 with an air suspension that is apparently one of the best offroad vehicles in the world. Youtube it if you don't believe me. I have played around with it a little bit on non-maintained roads (eg: carsonby road in kars) and construction sites and even with the regular all season tires it seems to be incredibly capable. I would like to go on a trail ride with one of you people and have some...

And what is the question? Why not touareg? Its your rig, no one is stopping you from going and participating any trail run. There is trail run today for instance, why don't you go? No offense but the rest is just hot air.

Mitko is right, Carp trail is today. I am sure we can see how far you go down the trail. It isn't too hard of a trail especially with how dry a summer we had. Just be aware you may get some pinstriping or possible body damage depending on your clearances. I would be interested in seeing how capable it is on one of our trails.

Nothing wrong with the Touareg. That vintage is a good one since it has low range. I expect it'll go anywhere a full body rig can practically go. Hell, I'll trade you my built Jeep for it. LOL

Just be prepared to get the body scratched to hell. It's the nature of off-roading in this area. I like to think of it as "patina". :)

Well I guess there is next year... However we could set up a gorge run in a couple weeks (turkey day next weekend and all that).

If you have the balls to take a steel rake and scrape the side of your SUV, then you will be able to tolerate pin striping. Be sure to use a video camera when you do it :) If you are made of money and can afford to replace dealership parts on your SUV, then give it a go. Call your dealer and get some quotes on control arms, drive shafts, and ball joints. You will be surprised how expensive they are. You can probably get a trail worthy YJ/TJ for less than $5000. I'd also keep in mind that It's unibody, potential severe damage can be irreversible. If you still want to come out and try, go ahead. A lot of guys here would certainly be interested in what it's capable of doing. I'm not trying to make a joke here, I'm just trying to get you in the right state of mind - I too was in a similar situation when I was bone stock, the difference is my FJ has a lot of potential and aftermarket support. I bit the bullet and started taking it on the trails. My paint job is now a write-off and I've broken parts that I knew weren't made for trails.

What he said. Everyone would love to see what aTourag can do. It's the question of whether your wallet can afford it.

Nothing against the Touareg as it might be fine for some of the trails around here but nothing puts the damper on the day than having to drag an inadequate vehicle along or having something break along the way. It's happened before.

Being a little less flippant...

The reality is the VW has rear and centre lockers, a low range and decent ground clearance with the air suspension. Put some decent tires on it and do some banging around at a stocker run and run a couple of mud pits and that is enough of the type of capability required for most people to get to a fishing hole or do some back roads exploring. Not everyone wants a wheeling buggy.

The issues with the Touareg as I see it...

Pin striping. Depending on your mind set that may be a problem.

Electronics. My main worry with the machine is how hardened the electronics are within the vehicle. It's no modern Land Cruiser after all and the Germans like electronics in their vehicles for no real good reason some times.

Structure. It's not a POS Jeep unibody so I expect the unibody will be pretty durable. BUT, that said, I expect that if you really wheel a Touareg hard the unibody will do a lot of flexing and as a result the vehicle will pick up a lot interior creaks and rattles.

The drivetrain is probably strong enough for mild-moderate wheeling. Anything can be fixed and I really doubt a newbie wheeler is going to drive it hard enough to break it the first time out. Someone complained about costs of replacement parts. Whatever, it's his coin to spend.

If you are prepared to take the risks of the issues above then go for it.

good one John ...open OJC for everybody, make yourself another club or whatever...dont care. but learn to read finally for Gods sake. No one is trashing the guy, or at least I dont see it. actually the comments are friendly in our way... again we are not a ladies club.
and if you read more carefully you'll probably see that the guy is actually the one who trashes himself - from the very first post he keeps insisting that his vehicle is very capable offroader - based on what - on you tube videos. and even you must know that there is only one way to prove somethings capabilities and this is not utube neither the forum crawling.
yes, actually why not a touareg? but the guy keeps posting and never showed up at a trail although since his first appearance we had quite a few runs, some of which completely doable with his rig. which makes him perfect candidate for ojc membership.

It isn't just this post Mitko. It is a combination of many. It is just and underlying attitude that I get when reading this forum. Just my take. ( actually the take of many)

Maybe we will call it " OJC and Friends" Bwahahahaha!!

Review of the thread up until now:

Posts saying try it: 8
Posts saying don't try it: 1
Posts warning about breakage/value:11
Irrelivant posts: 11

We all seem to agree, and I'm sure you would too: Give it a shot, but that car is expensive.
We aren't being negative, we're just giving some technical input on the sport and the vehicle. He hasn't replied, but if he wanted to spend a lot of money, this could potentially be one of the most technical and impressive rigs in the club.

So let's see what he has to say and we'll take it from there

This :lmao:

The guy posts about how his truck is the best because of youtube - twice - but never shows up to a run or meeting. Shit or get off the pot :p

I personally suspect he is a troll. :lmao:
