These things are about $400 to buy, but BC4x4 has a great writeup on rebuilding them, unfortunately my casing is cracked, so I need another one....

I think they are same for ZJ/YJ, as long as it is from a 1997+ automatic 4 speed transmission. 3 speed is not compatible as far as I know.

If you have a parts truck lying around, I will come and pull this piece off myself and give you money..

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks, I'll look into this. I need to pass Ontario emission test, and right now this is throwing a code and I failed, so I wonder if the bypass will throw a code? By code I mean check engine light.

^^ thanks for the NSS junkpile! I am still not sure what the extra wire is for (newer AX4 NSS on '98 run 7 wires versus older ones which are 6 wire). Even after looking at wiring diagrams, the wire colours are not same as the actual wire colours LOL..

I have the newer connector on the older NSS and I left the 7th wire hanging. I basically tried to match up the wires as they go into the NSS, so whether I got the right 7th wire is a bit if a guess. I put the NSS on the jeep and it starts up in both park and neutral, and it shifts into drive, d3, 1/2 and reverse.

I'm waiting for the mechanic to check for codes next, before I solder the wires up. I'll share another update soon.

Cheers,

Mike

Old style

New style

These diagrams confirm that the outputs are identical for these six wires..... It doesn't even show the seventh wire on the new style. I'll keep searching.

So it appears that the mysterious extra wire is an output added to the newer models (97-01) to confirm that it is in drive.

^^ very helpful information! I have been looking at it for a while now lol..

With my "unconnected 7th wire", I suspect I will still get malfunction codes then, as I won't be closing that (D) circuit, and the computer won't be getting the drive message when I am in drive.

Since there is no 7th wire from the switch, there is no way to close that circuit (D) unless I were to jumper inside the switch (D-3), but then I would be closing 2 circuits (D) and (3) and I bet that would set off a malfunction code.

I may be confused but that is what I see from the various diagrams and pics??

Cheers,

Mike

Hmmmm. I suppose the best way to tell would be to open your original one and compare it to the one I gave you. See if there's an extra contact a and to what pin it has continuity when in D.
I betcha it's just a cruise control input to the PCM. Cruise is PCM controlled on the 97-01 and wasn't on the 91-96? Hopefully the light stays off.
But if not you should make a run to Kenny U-pull, they'd probably have one for dirt cheap.
