He means when the pump is spinning, not the torque converter. They are related, of course - can't spin the pump without the TC spinning, but you can spin the TC (at least the impeller) without spinning the tranny input shaft / pump.

Thanks Bill!

Hey Jon - This might interest you:

http://www.carcraft.com/projectbuil...matic_transmission_rebuild_buildup/index.html

Especially this part:

27. Normally, stock TH350s have a spring in the manual low control valve that automatically changes gears at a predetermined rpm. However, the B&M TransKit replaces the spring with a metal sleeve that blocks the valve, allowing the transmission to remain in First gear no matter how high the engine rpm goes. This is beneficial for racers who want to manually shift (at a specific rpm) their cars at the dragstrip for maximum power and lowest e.t.'s. But if you put the trans in Drive, the unit will shift normally for around-town driving.

Hummmm. Is that the kit you are getting?

I'm glad you have a desk job and can find all this great info that I can copy off of. :D

If you go on summit, B&M has two kits for the TH350. One with the shift kit and one without. The one without the shiftkit is $100 less, so that is what I am getting as I don't need it with the RMVB. But the one in the article is the one with the shift kit included.

Also, if you go on B&M's website, they have a PDF you can download for the installation of the kit with the shift kit, and it also includes the VB mods. Very good read....

To add to our shifter discussion:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/shifter/

Coles notes:

Adrian, I did as we discussed, plus added one other touch. Worked slick as whale snot on an ice floe.

I can:
- positively and securely hit any gear (1,2, or 3) I want when coming back out of P, R, or N.
- Effortlessly up-shift through the forward gears without needing the trigger.
- Quickly and easily bump or slam into N from any forward gear without any fear of over- or under-shifting.
- Quickly and easily slam into R from any forward gear without any fear of over or under-shifting.

Check out the video.

Very nice Bill!!

That looks Perfect :glasses:

If you check the Pirate thread, Dustin makes some compelling arguments for the first design, rather than the second.

All very interesting - I too look forward to real-world testing.

Yah, he does.. Was not aware of the shift to R then N to unload the Drivetrain for easier t-case shifting....

i UPDATED THE ARTICLE FOR A MORE THOROUGH DISCUSSION OF THE (caps lok sorry) pros and cons of the two different designs.

Seems the most important consideratin is how often and how relaibly do you need that reverse slam.

I may go back to my original design.

It only takes one missed trigger grab to fail at one save to ruin your day.

But I do prefer the trigger for reverse from an HFE standpoint - so I will wait until all is installed and see how hard it is to quickly grab that trigger before I switch back.

Nice as always. I'm just daydreaming of the whole situation that will lead up to one of those reverse slams!!!!

Well, ordered $1200 worth of parts today LOL

I ordered everything I need to rebuild the tranny, including RMVB also Motor Mounts, T-Case adapter and Flywheel/Spacer/bolts for TH350 to LS1 mounting.

This will get the motor sitting in the truck and then need sensors, harness exhaust and fuel system to get it running.

I guess the build will begin shortly :glasses::glasses:

Trying to keep up Eh? :glasses:

Let me know before you do any of the harness/fuel stuff etc, perhaps we can double up and save some costs.
