Taking on my first regearing in the near future. I have sat through Mike regearing my old axles but I am planning on doing my new ones. Lucky that I don't have to deal with crush sleeves this time but I need some of the hand tools to borrow.
Need at least the following:
inch-pound torque wrench
dial indicator
case spreader (don't know if I need one yet but may need one as I have read that with Arbs have the shims on the outside it gets tricky trying to fit it all in otherwise)

Anyone have...

Google home made case spreader. Used one in the past worked great.

Worst part is the first link is Home made Case Spreader Fail on Pirate :) but I may not need one and if I do I may try that out.
Thanks!
So I definitely need to source a dial indicator

I have a dial indicator with magnetic mount you can borrow, you just have to come over to Dunrobin.

I could grab it and bring it to the meeting.

Make sure the inch pound torque wrench is a non click type and goes down low enough if you are using it for bearing preload

Why does it need to be a dial versus a click type? Not even sure I know the difference.

You need to ask Santa for a gift certificate to PA, Chris.

The inch pound torque wrench is used to determine preload which is essentially the amount of resistance the pinion is under when turning freely. With a click type it doesn't give you a very accurate measurement compared to a beam torque wrench.

PA has a $199 12 ton press that goes on sale every little while (looks to be 4-6 weeks)at $119. I am planning on picking one up.
I went to Auckland-Grainger's website and they have a beam style inch-lb torque wrench. If I can't find one I may pick it up.
Bill Ansel (billavista) wrote the bible on doing regearing and perfectly explains what needs to be done.

Gotcha! I always thought the "beam type" at CTC was the poor man's wrench! :lmao:

the issue with your typical beam type is the range is huge. when you are playing with a variance of up to 10 inch-lbs, a range on a cheap beam type which can be easily 600 inch lbs it is hard to stay in spec. also reading up on it changes in back lash and tooth pattern can change what the preload will be.

Well i ordered a beam style inchlb torque wrench from Acklands grainger and got it today. They actually delivered it although i was expecting that i would have to pick it up. Also picked up a dial indicator so i dont need to borrow yours Richard (assuming you read this).
